The remake of Mara Clara on ABS-CBN starring Kathryn Bernardo and Julia Montes was a success . The two young actresses were recognized and viewers followed the said teleserye. Julia and Kathryn proved that they can bring to life the characters of Judy Ann Santos and Gladys Reyes, who starred in the previous Mara Clara.
Now, their ability to compete in drama will be put to the test on the big screen. Julia and Kathryn star in Star Cinema’s new movie, Way Back Home, a family drama that deals with love and forgiveness.
This film stars Tonton Gutierrez, Lotlot de Leon and Agot Isidro. Enrique Gil and Sam Concepcion are the love-teams of Kathryn and Julia. It is directed by Jerry Lopez Sineneng.
Way Back Home is about two sisters who have been separated for 12 years. Kathryn will play the role of Ana Bartolome while Julia will play the role of Jessica Santiago.
They will be separated and live in different worlds. Ana (Kathryn Bernardo) was adopted by fishermen while Jessie (Julia Montes) grew up in a middle-class family. Because of a swimming competition, the two’s paths will cross again.
But Jessie is not used to having a share of her parents’ attention. Will she be able to accept her brother who has been away from their family for so long?
During the film’s press conference held last night, August 3, at the Dolphy Theater of the ABS-CBN compound, cast members Kathryn Bernardo, Julia Montes, Enrique Gil, Sam Concepcion and Ms. Agot Isidro, along with their director, Direk Jerry Sineneng, were interviewed by the media.
According to the veteran director, Kathryn and Julia are the next Judy Ann Santos and Claudine Barretto in today’s generation of Filipino films because of the talent they have displayed . While working with Kathryn and Julia, Director Jerry said he saw the potential of the two young stars.
Direk said, “This is the launching of Kathryn and Julia who were loved by the audience in Mara Clara. These two will go far. They can be considered future superstars.”
PEP.ph also interviewed the two stars of the film—Kathryn Bernardo and Julia Montes—about their launching movie.
What is the difference between acting in film and acting for television?
“This is different from Mara Clara , there are different family problems that are tackled here, the forgiveness and acceptance of siblings in the family. There is no hero or villain here. We are both victims of a situation,” said Julia, who was known as the villain Clara in a previous teleserye on the Kapamilya network.
He added: “We really can’t believe that Kathryn and I actually have a movie after our success in Mara Clara . We are grateful to ABS-CBN for giving us this big break and at the same time there is pressure on our part because it is a big challenge to please the viewers of our movie.”
As for Kathryn, she admitted that she feels the weight of the responsibility given to them as the stars of this film .
“We really gave everything we could to make the film better and make it worth the money the viewers paid. Because we were a bit under pressure, in Mara Clara, they would just turn on their televisions and watch us, but in our film, the viewers will actually pay to watch our film. That’s why we really tried to make it worth the money they paid.”
“We are so thankful and so happy because we were given the chance to show a different side of ourselves. You won’t just see Mara or Clara in our film, but you’ll also see a unique Julia and Kathryn.”
