Pampanga’s Jasmin Bungay will represent the Philippines in the 2024 Miss Globe pageant.
Bungay was crowned Binibining Pilipinas Globe 2024 on Sunday, having advocated for the LGBT community during the question and answer portion.
During the Q&A segment for the Top 15 contestants, Bungay was asked by Miss Universe 1969 Gloria Diaz: “If you were given 30 minutes to talk to the public, what would you talk about?”
Bungay responded by pushing for the passage of the SOGIESC Equality Bill, and stressed how the LGBT community has helped the pageant industry.
“If I would be given 30 minutes to talk to the public, I would like to talk about the passing of the SOGIESC (Equality) Bill. Because in celebrations such as pageants, this community has contributed so much and in this regard we can give back to them by supporting this cause because as an individual, it is our responsibility that we ensure that everyone is treated equally despite their SOGIE,” she said.
The Senate Committee on Women, Children, Family Relations and Gender Equality filed a consolidated SOGIESC Equality Bill in 2022 after committee hearings. Versions at the House have been transmitted to its Committee on Appropriations.
Opponents of the bill — including Sen. Joel Villanueva and his father, religious leader and CIBAC party-list Rep. Eddie Villanueva — worry that passage of the bill would create “special rights” for LGBTQIA+ people and threaten “social order.”
Sen. Villanueva last year suggested a more “holistic” anti-discrimination bill to benefit all marginalized groups.
Last year’s bet, Anna Lakrini, ended her journey as 2nd runner-up.
Since 2004, the Miss Globe pageant has crowned queens advocating for the woman’s role in the world.
