Beauty queens who were stripped of their crowns

Throughout the years, there has been history in beauty pageants of stripping the winners of their crowns for various reasons.

In 2010, Binibining Pilipinas Charities Inc. initially stripped Venus Raj from representing the Philippines in the Miss Universe 2010 pageant for citizenship issues. According to reports, there had been inconsistencies with Venus’ birth certificate. Fortunately, Binibining Pilipinas returned the crown to her after securing a Philippine passport. Venus placed fourth runner-up in the Miss Universe, which also started the country’s streak in prestigious pageant.

In 2024, Miss Grand International became the talk of the town when dethroned Miss Grand Myanmar Thae Su Nyein as its second runner-up due to “inappropriate behavior and actions that violated several regulations.”

Venus Raj

Venus Raj was initially stripped away from representing the Philippines at the Miss Universe 2010 pageant for citizenship reasons. Fortunately, Binibining Pilipinas reinstated her to represent the Philippines after the Department of Public Affairs granted her a Philippine passport.

Esabela Cabrera

In 1997, Mutya ng Pilipinas crowned Esabela Cabrera as the winner only for the pageant to appoint first runner-up Sheryll Moraga as her replacement. According to reports, the organizers received a letter from the father of Esabela’s then-boyfriend that she was pregnant and would be married soon. Soon after, the organizers secured a “resignation letter” from Esabela, and she later learned that she was stripped of her crown.

In 2013, a judge ordered the organizers of Mutya ng Pilipinas to pay Esabela 1.1 million pesos in damages.

Vanessa Mae Walters

Vanessa Mae Walters was crowned as Miss Eco Teen Philippines 2019 but she was stripped of her title after a few weeks for violating the rules of the organization — misrepresentation of her credentials, unprofessional behavior, at indecency.

Franki Russell

Actress Franki Russell was initially appointed as Miss Universe New Zealand and was set to compete in the upcoming 2024 Miss Universe pageant in Mexico. However, Franki dethroned because to the “racy” nature of her films in the Philippines. One of the reason also was the cancellation of the Miss Universe New Zealand from the franchise holder Yugen PR.

Thae Su Nyein

Less than a week after the coronation night, Miss Grand International stripped its second runner-up Thae Su Nyein of her crown due to “inappropriate behavior and actions that violated several regulations.”

Oxana Fedorova

In the Miss Universe 2002 pageant, Oxana Fedorova made history as the first Russian to had been crowned Miss Universe. Unfortunately, she was dethroned from her title as she could not travel to fulfill her duties.

Gabriella Brum

German-British beauty queen Gabriella Brum won the Miss World 1980 pageant but she resigned hours later. Her initial reason was that her boyfriend disapproved but it was later revealed that she was forced to resign after an allegation was made that she had nude photos.

Marjorie Wallace

Marjorie Wallace was the first American to be crowned as Miss World in 1973. However, she was seen having an affair with singer Tom Jones while being engaged to Formula One driver Peter Revson, which was a violation of the Miss World rules.
